Why the PUBG Frying Pan’s Got Game
In a game full of lethal military hardware, one weapon stands out: the frying pan! PUBG has exploded into a worldwide sensation, but few players are familiar with the material it’s based on… The concept is simple enough: scavenge for guns and other helpful items, then fight to the death! While there are tons of spinoffs (cough cough, Hunger Games), PUBG owes its existence to the Japanese novel Battle Royale by Koushun Takami. And it’s from this unlikely source that the entire genre (and of course, that deadly frying pan) stems! Eurogamer just published a great interview with Brendan Greene, aka PLAYERUNKNOWN, where he explains the origin story of this fan favorite.
Of course, the original Battle Royale features a distinct lack of frying pans… The blunt kitchen object in question is a pot lid! But don’t let that get you down: click through for the article and enjoy this tale of how Erangel ended up with a pan as its iconic weapon!
